NORTHERN TERRITORY - DARWIN
Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory and is the largest city in the sparsely poulated territory but the smallest of all capital cities in Australia.
It is one of the most modern capital cities in Australia due to rebuilding after two events: Japanese air raids during World War II and after being devastated by Cyclone Tracy in 1974.
The original inhabitants of the greater Darwin area are the Larrakia people. In 1839, the captain of the HMS Beagle, John Clements Wickham, sailed into Darwin harbour and named the region "Port Darwin" in honour of former shipmate Charles Darwin.
Sitting on the coast of the Timor Sea, Darwin has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.
Darwin has a youthful population, the average age being 32 years old. Entertainment in Darwin includes weekly markets (such as the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets), festivals such as the Darwin beer-can regatta where contestants' race boats are made exclusively of beer cans!
