ACT - CANBERRA
Located on the ancient lands of the Indigenous Ngunnawal people, Canberra's name is thought to mean 'meeting place', derived from the Aboriginal word 'Kamberra'.
In 1908, Canberra was selected to be the capital of Australia and the city was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, an architect from Chicago, who won an international design competition.
The total area of the Australian Capital Territory is 2400 square kilometres which is very small considering the immense size of Australia!
Half of the ACT is protected as national park or reserve and there are many opportunities for outdoor pursuits such as hiking and camping.
Canberra is a modern and well planned city with many national attractions such as: Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the Australian Mint and the National Gallery. As well, Canberra hosts many festivals and exhibitions every year.
