SESSION 4A

Ben Doran, University of Newcastle & Luqing Wang, UOW College
Better Through Benchmarking

Abstract
At the beginning of 2018, the UON English Language and Foundation Studies Centre and the University of Wollongong College commenced a peer review project focused on benchmarking standards in relation to assessment inputs and outputs of their respective Direct Entry Programs. What inspires such madness? According to Frost (1914):
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.

The assessment of writing was the focus of the first phase and with peer reviews now complete, both centres have had some time to reflect on what they have learnt from this process, how benchmarking supports innovation in EAP programs, and how the mischief of spring might be just what is needed to bring about positive change.
