SESSION 2B

Gary Brook, TEQSA
Meeting the ELICOS 2018 Standards for Direct Entry programs

Abstract
In March 2018 the revised standards governing English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) came into force. One change included in the revised standards was the requirement that ELICOS courses providing direct entry into tertiary education courses have formal measures in place to ensure that assessment outcomes are comparable to other criteria used for admission to the tertiary education course of study, or for admission to other similar courses of study. The subsequent release of guidance notes to accompany the standards elaborated further on this requirement stating that the intent of the standard was to ensure that TEQSA could be satisfied that students who enter higher education by direct entry from an ELICOS program meet comparable English language criteria to students who enter via other means.

The guidance notes also included examples of recommended approaches which providers could consider including:
• External benchmarking/moderation of assessment
• Benchmarking assessments to validated language proficiency frameworks
• Predictive validity of assessment /tracer studies
• Concurrent validity of assessment /external testing

This session facilitated by Gary Brook, the Director of the Assessment and Investigations Group, Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) will provide an opportunity for delegates to ask questions related to the challenge of meeting this aspect of the standards.

Questions from delegates are being sought in advance. Please use the link on this webpage to submit your questions before COB July 1st.
