Graduate outcomes of undergraduate students with English as an Additional Language (EAL): Patterns and Implications

Abstract
This presentation investigates the graduate exit testing outcomes of undergraduate students with English as an Additional Language (EAL) to answer the following research questions:

• What are the graduating outcomes of undergraduate international students as measured by IELTS Academic and GPA?
• Is there any systematic variability in language proficiency and academic outcomes by gender, first language, discipline, or pathway into university?
• What implications are there for ELICOS and higher ed providers from these findings?

Bio
Dr Pamela Humphreys is the Director at Macquarie English Language Centre. Her PhD, on the topic of English language proficiency in higher education, won the IEAA outstanding postgraduate thesis in international education award in 2016, and she has won numerous other awards for her work related to English language support. Pamela has worked in ELICOS and higher education for over 25 years in the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia. She was an IELTS examiner for 22 years and IELTS Assistant Principal Examiner and item writer for many years.
